For the majority of U.S. employers, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act did not have its desired effect, finds a recent CareerBuilder survey. Still, among those who received direct assistance, many have hired or plan to take on more workers due to the stimulus package.
Of the more than 3,100 private and public sector hiring managers who participated in the survey, 23% reported an increase in business in the third quarter due to the economic stimulus program, while 77% did not.
Six percent of respondents said that their organization received direct funding from the ARRA program. Of these employers, more than one-third (36%) plan to recruit new employees in the fourth quarter, and 42% have already hired new employees this year as a result of the funding. Top sectors of hiring include:
- Technology: 22%
- Research/Development: 18%
- Sales and Marketing: 12%
- Customer Service: 12%
- Legal: 9%
- Human Resources: 9%
- Accounting /Finance: 8%
- Business Development: 7%
Of those who didn’t receive funding from the economic stimulus program, 14% revealed that they still benefited in terms of increased business. Twenty percent of companies said they hired new workers this year as a result of the heightened business and 19% plan to bolster their staff in the fourth quarter.
